I have spent WAY too much time investigating these little screws, and decided to put everything in one place to make sharing this information simpler when talking to manufacturers in an effort to recreate these machine screws.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, they&#8217;re #4-40 1 1\/8&#8243; pan-head machine screws. How hard could it be?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some notes to get things started, and the reasons why this is all so complicated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The top should be flat.<\/li>\n<li>The slot should be perfectly perpendicular. Modern pan-head slotted screws are not made this way (see pics below)<\/li>\n<li>The vintage screws seem to be highly ferrous and are much more magnetically attractive than the modern screws.<\/li>\n<li>Although it&#8217;s hard to measure the slot, it seems to be a perfect fit for my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kleintools.com\/catalog\/single-bit-screwdrivers\/316-inch-cabinet-tip-screwdriver-4-inch\">Klein 601-4 3\/16-inch Cabinet Tip Screwdriver<\/a>\u00a0and seems to fit with the highlighted ANSI spec below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The ANSI Standard<\/h2>\n<p>Although there is an ANSI standard for machine screws (specifically\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasnet.com\/articles\/hardware\/about-machine-screws-and-nuts-sizes-and-key-dimensions\/\">ANSI B18.6.3-1972 (R1991)<\/a>), <\/em>and\u00a0these vintage screws seem to fit within the range highlighted in the chart on the left (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasnet.com\/articles\/hardware\/about-machine-screws-and-nuts-sizes-and-key-dimensions\/\">thomasnet.com<\/a>), there seems to be no accepted standard for what &#8220;pan head&#8221; really means. For example, the chart on the right, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almabolt.com\/pages\/catalog\/screws\/machine.htm\">almabolt.com<\/a> shows that either of the highlighted shapes are acceptable, and the ANSI standard does not list detailed dimensions of the head such that a flat top surface is required aside from the picture.
